Night Skate Captain
We welcomed the new year with our first Night Skate, from Stadium MRT Station to Newton Food Centre. Spanning across a distance of 12.7km, this route took us through scenic locations at Marina Bay Sands and right in the heart of town through Orchard Road.
Most were absent due to the final weekend before the Chinese New Year to get prepared. But nonetheless, 20 skating enthusiasts showed up and kept the skating spirit going.
It is always a joy to welcome new faces to this activity, and we had the pleasure of having a little girl, Zing Ying and a young lady, Xin Rong, both of whom are our regular students, to join us and have their first taste of night urban skating.
Things got underway as we made our way to the back of the Singapore Indoor Stadium towards Tanjong Rhu suspension footbridge.
Crossing the bridge brought us onto Tanjong Rhu Promenade Park Connector and towards Skyline Promenade Gardens by the Bay East which boasts a splendid view of the Formula 1 pit building and Marina Bay Sands. Coincidently, the 2014 Chingay rehearsal was going on and we had the pleasure of catching the fireworks display as we skate along.
Soon after, we reached Marina Bridge and crossed over to Marina Barrage before heading towards Satay by the Bay - Gardens by the Bay's very own food centre featuring loads of local delicacies, where we had our short break.
After the break, we continued past the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest and arrived at Marina Bay Sands. Skating along the Waterfront Promenade is an absolute luxury as we take in the beautiful scenery that the waterfront offered and the cool evening breeze from the waters.
After making our way past The Promontory at Marina Bay, we arrived at One Marina Boulevard and headed towards Clifford Pier and Merlion Park. After a few photo moments, we transited under Anderson Bridge and went into Esplanade Park.
We located the underpass entrance on the other end of the park and decended under to cross over to War Memorial Park and Bras Basah Road.
With time on our hands, we decided to detour and headed Singapore Management University's Lee Kong China School of Business building to enter their underground tunnel with the hope of it bringing us to Dhoby Ghaut in a jiffy. However, our hopes were thwarted by an internal event that blocks up the tunnel and hence we had to backtrack and cross over the campus on top instead.
The Kopitiam Food Centre at Manulife Centre granted us some much need rest and hydration, before we continued our journey towards Plaza Singapura Shopping Mall.
After crossing the Istana, we were right onto Orchard Road, travelling amongst evening shoppers and many of the significant malls like Centrepoint, Paragon and Lucky Plaza.
We made a turn towards Scotts Road at Tang Plaza and Marriot Hotel and headed towards Far East Plaza and Goodwood Park Hotel, as we inched nearer to our destination.
We took a shortcut at Cairnhill Road and then turned into Anthony Road, which brought us to Cairnhill Community Club. By then, the food centre was within our sights on the opposite side of the road.
Tucking into the Food Centre to enjoy our supper, we reminisced our smooth journey all thanks to the great weather. And for the newcomers, completing the journey opens up a new chapter in their love for the sport, urban style.
